MTV LIVE + The After Show | Set design | Furniture design

Taking over designing the set for MTV’s main show MTV LIVE in 2006 led to giving the show a new look when the producers wanted to shoot in a different part of the Masonic Temple’s Concert Hall in Toronto. Creating a distressed wall as a backdrop was the first piece of the puzzle to give the look a classic and aged vibe and one that will suit the building’s elderly aesthetic. Other elements such as an ornate frame around the tv, a modern designed coffee table, and custom pillows add to the eclectic and whimsical attitude of the show.

This led to a series of other shows that we’d design looks for. The Hills’ After Show was the first, and received a few face lifts over the years going from reds and oranges to a POP palette that would host After Shows for The Hills’ final season, The City, and Peak Season. As well the design for other shows such as 1Girl5Gays, Creeps, Cocktales, Jersey Shore Pre-Show, and specials such as The Killers’ Brandon Flowers Live @ The Masonic Temple.

Jellyfunk is a borderless creative boutique design studio and future lifestyle brand. It is the vision of Creative Director & Principal Adam Nathan and focuses on many avenues of creative expression mainly within Communication + Design and Entertainment.
Every day is different and so too are the projects we’re involved in. Our passion for creating has us focusing on art/creative direction, production design, environment design, branding and graphics to live musical events.
With access to a collective of brilliance in different fields, we love to curate teams to collaborate with as we love outside the box thinking and live to create for the pleasure of others…and ourselves. Oh, and we’re always up for a challenge.
A little bit about Adam…

ADAM NATHAN | Jellyfunk | co-founder Good CompanyTo connect the dots of Adam’s creative life would probably resemble that of a Jackson Pollock painting. His openness in creatively expressing a concept or emotion has taken him through a spectrum of positions over the years that ventured through art, music, design and business. After 10 years as a freelance mural artist, Adam decided to cultivate the commercial side of art by studying advertising and Communication + Design at the Ontario College of Art + Design (OCAD). Having been a long time club goer in Toronto’s emerging underground dance-music scene he made the move from the dancefloor to the DJ booth by using his student loan to buy turntables, a mixer and started collecting records. He very quickly began throwing parties and then decided to leave OCAD to set his sights on the music industry by forming a partnership and founded Release Records in the beginning of 2000.Release quickly grew to being known as one of the world’s premier record shops and the brand quickly grew from a record shop, to a family of record labels, an online music store and a distribution company to follow. During his time at Release Adam focused on A&R, label & brand design, to co-managing the storefront. He also began producing and was DJing a lot, holding multiple residencies in Toronto’s premier clubs as well as playing internationally in cities such as London, Tokyo, Tel Aviv and New York. However, in 2004, just after the label was nominated for a Juno Award for Best Dance Track (a collaboration with Hi-Bias), Adam felt creatively drained and took a leave of absence from DJing and producing and turned his focus on forming his own brand, Jellyfunk. This got him back to a different form of art – one with no borders or creative limits and would be an organic endeavour leading into Creative/Art Direction, Set/Production Design, Branding + Graphics.Shortly after the 2006 launch of MTV in Canada Adam began working with the brand by designing the sets for the majority of the network’s shows such as The Hills After Show (and all After Shows), 1G5G, In Concert with Brandon Flowers (The Killers), and gradually gave their main show, MTV LIVE, a new look in the beginning of 2008. Later that year, the show went on to winning a Gemini Award for Best Talk Series.Adam’s goal today is growing Jellyfunk into a lifestyle brand and moving into film production/direction, collaborating with brands, and back into the world of music with fresh eyes and ears.
